It seems like just yesterday I was sitting at the New Mexico Bowl in sub-Artic temperatures watching college football and celebrating a successful beginning-of-construction press conference at the Albuquerque Convention Center. I had just signed the lease for my apartment and had the chance to meet members of the ABQ Convention and Visitors Bureau and local media.
Now, it's already June and there's only 33 days left in the 2008 USBC Open Championships. Nearly 50,000 bowlers have been through, including my own team. In the Media Relations department, I've written or edited more than 130 stories and On the Lanes segments and sent 83 press releases. We've seen 24 perfect games and two 800 series. We marched five 50-year bowlers and watched two bowlers compete for the 60th time.
The main thing we try to remember when we come to work each day, it that even though it's day 110 for us, every day is opening day for 480 bowlers. One of our main goals is to provide the same memorable experience for our bowlers no matter what day they come, and I truly believe we are accomplishing that.
And while many of us are looking ahead to upcoming moves to Arlington as well as Las Vegas in December, we are far from winding down in Albuquerque.
Tomorrow night, Lava Lanes, the defending Regular Team champion will put its title on the line. On the same squad, 2006 Regular Doubles champions Paul Yoder and Bobby Stives will take to the lanes.
On Thursday and Friday, we will welcome former PWBA star Carolyn Dorin-Ballard and USBC Queens and Clash of Champions winner Lynda Barnes.
As I've said many times before, there's never a dull day at the Open Championships.
To those of you who still haven't bowled yet, I'll see you on the lanes.
