Do you people actually believe that a person only joins a bowling league to win awards?  Does a football player win an award each time he scores a touchdown - does a baseball player win an award each time he hits a home run, etc.  Bowling an honor score brings about a personal satisfaction that will live in your heart forever!  The award is just a means for "showing off your accomplishment" to others.  I could care less if I win an award - the friendships, the personal satisfaction are all the awards I need.

I totally agree with you. The USGA doesn't go award crazy in golf leagues. Why should the USBC do so in bowling leagues?

There are more benefits to certification (sanctioning) than the awards.   Certification gives me opportunities -  opportunity to participate in local, state and national tournaments, opportunity for leadership, opportunity to run well organized leagues and associations because of resourse materials made available by USBC, etc.  The $10.00 USBC certification fee is money well spent!!!

The certification (sanction) fee for USBC is $10.00.  Any additional fees that you could pay are for your state association ($1.00 maximum) and the rest is your local association dues.  Evidently you have high local association dues.

Where I am at, our sanction fees are $10 national $1 state and $5 local.  I just happen to have a copy of the 1976-77 ABC Playing Rules book and thought it might interesting for some to know what you got back then.

11-in- Row - either a black leather belt with buckle or 11-in-a-Row membership card

300 game - your choice of one - a mantel clock, standard design gold ring with diamond, or modern design with diamond ring, or Bulova Accutron watch, or diamond lapel pin tie tac, or bowling pin trophy or black leather belt with buckle with diamond. (talk about costs!)
    299 game - similar choices
298 game - again similar choices
800 series 10K gold Ruby stone ring or Seth Thomas Transistor battery clock

And lest not forget, all was not the same for the women - remember, we were divided by gender and age.  And oh yes, league championship patches were either ABC or Mixed Leagues.

Just a thought from the past while we bemoan the changes in the awards program.

    Ruth,
I'll add a little history lesson to go with your post. A comparison of 1976 and 2006 seasons, our association had the following:

           1976                                          2006
    30 centers                                 10 centers
    13,724 members                        3,964 members
    no 800 series only 12 700's       855 hi series + 42 more +
                                                    1841 700's
    1- 300 and 1- 11 in a row         150-300's + 51-299's +
                                                    17-298's + 105-11 in a row's
The Monmouth County association covers 472 sq miles.
I had a conversatio with the Detroit MI assocaition manager a while back and at that time he had given out over 10,000 awards already for this season. I agree with USBC needing to cut back on awards for cost cutting reasons.
I do agree with the suggestion of several people keeping the original honor scores and making them a once in a lifetime award.
