Deb: Embassy Suites is located directly off Lomas Boulevard. A number of bowlers I've talked to have stayed there, and no one had a bad thing to say about the experience. It's a very attractive property, and I think you should be pleased. It's a mile from the Convention Center, so it'll be a quick trip there. The side tournaments - BTM, BJI, and 40Frame - are held at two bowling centers directly across the street from each other - Holiday Bowl and Leisure Bowl. If you leave your hotel and head east on Lomas (towards the mountain for those of us who are geographically challenged), you'll run smack into them in about eight blocks or so. Both centers are in the first block of Lomas east of Louisiana Boulevard. Couldn't be easier! As for restaurants, just about everywhere in Albuquerque is kid-friendly. It's a very family-oriented society here. A few of the really upscale places may be better avoided, but I think every place I've mentioned welcomes children. Someone correct me if I'm wrong! Just be ready to drive for food. The only place I can think of within walking distance of Embassy Suites is a burger chain. Can't even remember which one - very forgettable. Hope this helps! Deb

{Tips his Hat} Thank You Ma'am.... as always a fountain of knowledge. Looking forward to spending some time in your city.
I could not stand not seeing this valuable thread not on the first page! Keep up the good work and giving us bowlers valuable information Deb!
Deb, anything you can tell me about Barcelona Suites as of April 10th? They are no longer "Best Western" I'll be there April 24-27. Should I look for a new hotel ? Location to other tournaments andrate of $69.99 / night sounded so good. Help Please.
Hey Deb, don't forget my Crab Cakes 4/23, 8:30pm
Deb,
first thank you for taking time to answer all the questions submitted, you have gone "above and beyond the call of duty" and have answered my question before I could post them:)
I will be bowling May 20th (8:30 PM ) and 21st (530 PM) and will pick up one of your newsletters.
Being from Southeast Va and working on the Bay with my Grandfather during my "Wonder Years" would those Crab Cakes be made of Sook or Jimmies:)

Honestly, I don't think a name change will have an immediate effect on a hotel's level of service. The Barcelona is in a great location for the side tournaments, and an easy drive on the surface streets to the Convention Center. I've been to the hotel (prior to the name change), and I thought it was a fairly nice property. I think oldhoop2 is staying there for the run of the BTM. If there was anything to be concerned about, he'd probably have already mentioned it.
I'll be heading down to the association office later this week, and that hotel is on my way. I'll stop by and do a quick walk-through just to verify my own thinking.
Doctor Doom: Hey Deb, don't forget my Crab Cakes 4/23, 8:30pm
I'm afraid you're going to be disappointed, Doctor Doom. We both know that the only good crab cakes are made from fresh-picked crabmeat, and since the overnight "live" shipments are outrageously priced (plus I don't think they're in season yet), I won't be making any crab cakes on April 23. When I first moved out here in 1998, I actually considered getting a shipment, but I called the crab house I like, and they were quoting fees of upwards of $150 for a bushel. Too spendy for my pocketbook! Heck, that's a new bowling ball!

Hey, Sam!
I'm glad I've been able to answer some of your questions, and I look forward to hearing feedback about our association newsletter. My goal is to provide the best possible resource to keep our bowlers informed about events and news in our local bowling community.
As for making fresh crab cakes - always ask for Jimmies. Sooks are for those who don't fully appreciate the Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab.
I think a bunch of our guys are going to catch a game after we bowl two weeks from today. We have a pretty good AAA team in our area as well. Is the Isotopes stadium new or has it been around a while?
On a much smaller note, how much is gas around ABQ? Just curious if there is much difference than here in the Midwest.
Thanks and two weeks can't come soon enough for me!

Isotopes Park is technically an old facility that was once home to the Albuquerque Dodgers and Albuquerque Dukes. With the decision to bring the Marlins AAA team to ABQ, the stadium was completely refurbished in 2003. The city paid around $25 million, I think, and the facility shows it. It has a "retro" feel on purpose, and it really fits into the surrounding area nicely. I think you'll enjoy an outting to the park.
As for gas prices, I just filled up the minivan for 3.419 a gallon. That's plus grade. Regular at that station was 3.299. We tend to fill up at the stations on reservation land, because they don't have to charge all the taxes. Gas tends to be a few cents less per gallon. The two stations at Tramway and I-25, a Valero and a Phillips, are both on reservation land.
Just re-read my response to the question about Isotopes Park, and it strikes me that I'm really beginning to sound like a tour book. That can't be good.

Your the Frommers of Albuquerque
Deb, thanks for the info on gas prices, it will be good for us as we are staying at a hotel near tramway. My question Deb what kind of mini-van do you own. A dodge or chrysler mini-van are program to run best on regular 87 octane.
Will be there on April 28-may2

We own a Ford Windstar, and you're correct that 87 is optimum. However, our choices here are 86 octane for regular or 88 octane for plus. With the altitude, it's recommended to use the 88.
