    Ball Release

Help anyone.  I am throwing an Ebonite Angular One, 15lbs, finger tip. I bought it last summer used it for a few

months, then went back to my old ball due to my average going in the ditch. Well that did not help and I want

to use this Ebonite ball, but all of a sudden, my release is all wrong. My thumb is coming out of ball last and as you know that

does not have good results, slide down lane or goes air borne.  I want to fix my release where my ball will roll when it

hits the lane.  Can anyone give me a tip on this?   Thank you so much......Cajun Mike

Not an expert but, one question. Do you use a wrist brace. It sounds to me like you are breaking your wrist back at the point of release. Instead of staying under the ball your wrist is collapsing back toward your elbow. This type release will definitely kill the ball. Try a brace, or try cupping the ball in your hand, and concentrate on kepping your hand cupped during release.

    Re: Ball Release

When you bought the new ball was it drilled the same as your old ball?  Any change in thumb pitch or span?  If you are not getting your thumb out first try and determine why?  I once changed pitch on my thumb so I could hold onto the ball 1/8th inch forward.  This made my release late for my thumb and I had to go back to no pitch zero.  Has this changed on your grip?

If your release has changed with the new ball or even with your old ball you have to determine what changed.  Do you have a thumb slug?  Or lifts in your balls?  If you don't then check the thumb hole to see if it is smooth or rough.  How does the thumb feel very tight or loose?  Do you use any tape in the hole or on your thumb?  I know lots of questions but you have to check what is causing your thumb to be late.

I once tried at practice standing at the line just feeling how I was releasing my ball.  A coach I had once had me knee on one knee same side as the ball and rock the ball back and forth and just let it go gently.  I did it on a rug with a pillow in front of me until I could feel my thumb comming out first.

I use a slug drilled out and with tape on my thumb.  I also have it with a snug fit but the tape is very smooth and my thumb comes out easily even though it is a snug fit.  Do you feel anything holding your thumb causing a late release.  Check into these things and even something that may cause your timing to be off and maybe your just holding on to long.

Good luck and take it one step at a time.
