    Warren,

I don't have the missing answers. But I do know they forgot a couple of questions to figure into the formula. How many beers and how much food while bowling.

You probably should also consider the skill of the bowler.  The better bowlers will throw more strikes, which means fewer balls thrown, less distance walked and fewer calories burned.  The way I have been bowling lately, I can assure you I am walking great distances and burning many calories.

    Re: Question

There are way too many variables to accurately estimate calories burned or miles walked.  How many shots did you throw, how many people are bowling on the pair of lanes, how far away are you sitting from the lane, etc.....

However, an average 150 lb person will burn 275 calories per hour bowling at a recreational level.  The more you weigh and the faster you bowl, the more calories burned.

If you only count the distance of the approach, walking to the foul line and back for 3 games:

    Perfect 900 series = 36 strikes = 1,224 ft or .24 miles.

    Random 600 series, averaging 5 strikes & 7 spares per games = 57 shots = 1,938 feet = .37 miles.

Bottom line -- bowling is better for you than bingo, but you can forget about those rock hard abs.

    Re: Question

A few years ago a "Bowling Digest" or "Bowler's Magazine" article referenced Jeff Briggs' (who writes for "Bowling this Month")  research.  He gave an estimate of about 280-360 calories burned in an hour.  It depends on the size of the bowler (more weight moved, more energy expended) and the pace of the bowling.  Jeff's research was under a continuous bowling format (such as practicing alone) and did not include substantial delays.  His research was supported by that of a Pennsylvania university (can't remember which one) that gave a general estimate of about 100 calories burned for every 20 minutes of continuous (or near continuous) bowling.
