Everyday we see countless bowlers deliver a good shot, then a terrible shot that goes brooklyn and then a terrific shot where everything is put together like a pro. Rightfully, there are a million parts it seems to keeping a shot online to the target and getting that leverage, angle and accuracy to the to carry at the pocket. Believe it or not, the majority of that accuracy begins with your feet and being able to post a great shot everytime. That balance at release is extremely important to repeating your shots and picking up your spares.
When you get to the line in good shape, start noticing the separation between your feet from the next to the last step and your slide foot. Some of us may not slide per se' nevertheless, this distance or separation that we create at the foul line is REPEATABLE.
We often don't give this area of our games that much attention because most feel that it is not something you can control. Most feel that once you get started in motion, what happens is what happens. This is not the case. For those times that you arrive at the foul line and you have very little separation between your feet at delivery your shot will generally release early and end up brooklyn. For those times you have excessive separation in your delivery, your shot may often slide well past your break point and have hardly any reaction back to the pocket often missing your mark or target some 2 to 4 boards to the outside.
So right there, is an opportunity for you to fine tune your delivery. Especially if your shots are generally around the headpin. There is "proper spacing" between your feet when you deliver the ball to the pocket. As true bowlers we have to move to that next level of "remembering" how it "feels" when we delivery a great shot and what that spacing between our feet or that "proper separation" felt like. That separation provided balance and power that provided a repeatable shot, if only we work to duplicate that finish at the line.
USBC Silver Level Coaches work to master the finish at the line. Often video taping and sculpturing an individuals delivery working backwards from the delivery at the foul line, to the set up on the approach. How you finish the shot brings everything together. Master understanding how too little or too much separation of your feet affects your shot. Bowl well!
