    Secr / Treas fee guidelines

Are there any guidelines within the USBC to support salaries within a league for officers? In the 28 team (30 in 2008-09) which I currently support the "salary" is $35 per team ($1000). I have noted this to be quite low for the work involved, only to hear others in the league complain that the fees are too high. YET, do you think anyone steps up to be an officer for next year?? NOT!! We do not have any monitary compensation for President and VP positions. Others I have heard of recent are $700 for 18 teams and $750 for 16 teams.

I would be interested to see input from other leagues as to compensation stipulated for performing these duties.

My current monday night league of 28 4 person teams pay .90 per bowler each night for 30 weeks.  That would be 3.60 per team each night for $100.80 per night times 30 weeks would be $3024.00 - in my opinion a ridiculous amount for her to be paid especially since the perfect secretary program does everything for you.  I also expect no mistakes for that kind of money.  When I first began bowling I had a secretary that did 40 teams for 40 weeks and charged .10 per bowler and he did everything by hand - now that was work and he did it for $640

Re: Secr / Treas fee guidelines

I current get $0.30 / bowler / night (8 teams, 29 weeks). That comes to a grand total of $348 for the year. I do not charge for any expenses (paper, ink, etc.).  So, your sec is getting $0.25 / bowler / night (assuming 5 person teams).  I personally think that is a good deal for the league.

As for what is the right amount, I guess that is up to each league.

     I do have a question for anyone/everyone.

This year, the winning team's sponsor choose not to receive a trophy.  Should the money not spent on that trophy (about $21) goto the first place team, or should it go into the prize fund and be divided out to everyone?

    Thanks,

I cannot speak for everyone in my area, but from the various leagues I've bowled in or be Sec/Treas for...the rate ranged from .20/bowler/night to .35/bowler/night, with the low range being for the Treasurer and the high end for the Secretary.  Personally I would have an issue bowling in any league with charges that were higher than that, especially since I know how much work is involved.

I have seen some strange leagues though...one instance was where the House was the Sec/Treas (no fee), but the league President received a salary of $700, essentially for picking up whatever envelopes weren't already turned into the front counter.  He didn't really do anything else as ALL rules questions were continually resolved by the House staff.

As for the sponsor trophy...I think it is usually awarded on behalf of the league to the winning team's sponsor.  So if the sponsor doesn't want it, then I would think the money would go back in the league's coffers.  I don't think it should go to the winning team, as it wasn't meant for them to begin with, but for their sponsor.

Until a couple of seasons ago, the position was split and two people served; secretary (my position) rose from 30 cents to 40 cents per bowler over the course of 10 years, while treasurer went from 20 to 30.  There were a few members that always asked when we got a raise and it happened every few years in nickel increments.

When the treasurer decided not to run again, I accepted the nomination and won.  At the subsequent summer meeting, I felt that 70 was too much and opted to drop my salary 15 cents to 55 per bowler which was also the lineage increase that year so there was no change in the prize fund.  I felt that amount was reasonable given that the league has its own web site, including domain name, for which I pay annually on my own.

Like another poster, I don't request re-imbursements for supplies as I feel it comes with the territory.  I've been in the position nearly 20 years and actually don't use canned software like BLS or Perfect Secretary as I've developed Excel sheets over time and am quite comfortable with those.  Plus I can design the pages the way I want them.

I don't feel it appropriate to ask for a raise; I will let the members make that motion.  The increase in the cost of lineage is bad enough on its own, especially in a center that is not well kept; asking for an increase is just an insult to injury.

Re: Secr / Treas fee guidelines

Duel sec, treas.  get paid .30 per bowler.  24-5 member teams.  about $1200.  This encludes sending in for about 20 honor score plaques and rings.  Also over 300 pins, pens patches and usbc cards.  Most awards were passed out the next week,  the honor score awards took 3 weeks.

Each and every bowler receives a ten page final report with more useless info than can be absorbed.  It breaks down not only who won over $80,000 in pots but who would have won if they would have gotten in.  $48,000 in prize money is passed out.  at an awards banques.

Asking for or accepting more money for this would not seem right to me.

Re: Secr / Treas fee guidelines

I find it amazing what other areas, regions and associations in how the Sec/treas are paid out. Most everyone here gets paid by the bowler, in my area it seems that there is a flat fee, normally about what the total sponsor fee is for the league. My Friday night league is $250.00 ten teams at $25.00 a team, Tuesday its at $350.00 for 12 teams and $30.00 sponsor fee. granted I did buy a program for the work, but that was mainly so that I did not miss any awards and to be able to send them on line for the leagues to see. I do have the league pay for 1 set of cartridges and other small supplies but its never over $100.

I disagree in putting the sponsor plaque money back into the prize fee, it should go to the winning team. Thats not knowing how the league pays out if by point money or place. If place then back into the prize if point then to them.

    those are my thoughts

    About the sponsor trophy.

Our league pays $0.75/pt, then it pays a certain % depending on the finish.  First received 16%, 8th (or last) got 9%.

And the money not spent was put back into the prize money to avoid any complaints.

My Friday Night Men's Handicap League, 10 teams of 5, let's me have my bowling free. I am secretary & treasurer. $13 a week times 32 weeks = $416. They paid me the same when we were at 12 teams and also at 8 teams. I do not charge the league for my secretay program nor supplies or other expenses. This is a fair price to me but if we go above 12 teams, I am sure that they would compensate me more. If you do the math, it comes out to be about $0.26 per bowler per week this year.

I'm the secretary and the treasurer for a 10 team league of 4 bowler teams.  I get paid $.25 per bowler per week.  That's $10 per week for 34 weeks.  I don't charge for any supplies.  I figure that I can take that out of the salary and still have a bit left over.  The league does not pay any other officers, but I am president in another league and I get paid $100 for the whole season.  As president, I will suggest that we do away with the payment for president this year.  This is the only league in our association which pays the president for their duties.  Some leagues don't do anything for the president and some leagues give a gift.

May I ask what the bowler's pay per session to bowl?    I have never heard of a league getting $48,000 in prize money.  What happened to the advice - Keep the prize funds low to avoid problems????

I run a 22 team / 5 man league and the prize fund is about $46,000 and we pay $21/wk for 35 weeks with the lineage being $9.50.  I imagine he may be close to that depending on the lineage.

Good day ... :) ... For our league there are 28 team 5 man teams. Collected fees are $20 per man per night with $10 going out for lineage. There is also a $50 sponsor fee per team that goes directly into the league payout fund.

Re: Secr / Treas fee guidelines

In the league that I bowl in, bowlers pay $10/night.  $6.50 for linage, $0.30 for sec/treas. fee, and $3.20 for prize fund.  So our prize fund is around $3,700, which is just fine with me.

I'm pretty sure that if bowling cost $20 or more a night, we would lose some bowlers.

Why not keep the costs down to bring in new teams/bowler (unless you have a full league).

You will alway have sandbaggers in any league....... does a bigger prize fund cause for more sandbagging?

$10 a night? That doesn't even cover lineage around here. Most leagues are between $18-22, with $10+ going for lineage, about $.30-.40 a night going to the sec/treas, which most of them don't even do much work, just count the money for the most part and then turn it and all the scoring/record keeping over to the center. I'm in two different leagues, one is 10 teams of 4 and the other is 12 teams of four. The 12 team league pays $20/week and has a total prize fund of $15,111, I'm not sure what it is for the 10 team league as I don't have the prize fund sheet for that league but I'm sure its around $10,000.
