    Help - 10# balls w/best hook qualities

My daughter is 15 and very thin, she is doing some weight training, but really can't comfortably throw anything heavier than a 10# ball.  She's taken the plastic ball as far as she/it can go.  She is in USBC league play, loves it, and really wants to continue bowling through highschool and maybe college.

She needs a 10# ball built to help her form good technique and better scoring results.  I've researched and noticed that most good balls below 12# don't have a weight block.  Some folks have suggested going with a 12# ball and drilling it for three fingers (fore, middle, pinky), instead of two.  I just don't think she has the muscle mass to support that right now.

Help me out here.  Does anyone know of 10# balls with excellent performance for the beginner-intermediate level bowler?

Any and all advice is appreciated.

    Blessings,  Will

Re: Help - 10# balls w/best hook qualities

     Hi Will,

I would suggest a couple of things.  If she is doing some weight training make sure to concentrate on the leg muscles.  Build the quadriceps.  You might also look at her diet and maybe the amount of sleep that she gets.   Proper diet makes a huge difference.  As for light weight balls the Tropical Storm is my normal recommendation after a polyester ball.  The coverstock is good but you are still going to have problems.  There is really no substitute for the heavier weight.

Another suggestion is to have a really good ball fitter drill her next ball.  Bad fit may also be causing some of her issues.  Find someone that really knows hand mechanics.  Be very selective.

After you have done all that or even during this find her a good youth coach.  She may be in a USBC youth league but that does not guarantee she is getting quality coaching or any coaching at all.  Learning good fundamentals and technique would be my recommendation over buying balls.
