    New Ball (Roto Grip Cell)

    Hi folks,

I just purchased the Roto Grip Cell, that everyone has been raving about.  Now up to this point I have thrown nothing but Storm equipment, and for the record I LOVE STORM BOWLING BALLS!  I am very much a down and in lefty.  So I usually line up center dot and throw it between 5 and 10 board.  The problem I am having is that this Cell is a fantastic ball, but I just can't control it like I do all my other equipment.  The gentleman who drilled my ball is someone whom I respect immensely, as A) he's one heckuva bowler, and B) he's drilled all my other stuff.  So I don't want to bug him with re drilling the ball for my style of play.  Am I going out of my mind here, or is it really as simple as setting up this ball to fit my style.  I've practiced with it quite a bit and I just can't seem to get it.  I feel like I am forcing it because of how much it breaks.  I love how this ball crushes the pins and it rolls really well.  But I am thinking I need it to fit what I do best.  Can anyone help me?  Again I would hate to have a ball re-drilled that does not need it.  Just to prove my point, I have yet to throw a 200 game with it, while with my older stuff (Storm Domination), I am very confident.  BTW my current average is nothing to jump and down about (177), but I know I can do better.

If the ball is getting into it's roll too early you might want to play around with  the coverstock. Maybe 4000 Abralon it? Maybe hit it with some polish for more length? There are many tweeks you can try before you have it redrilled. Out of box finish doesn't work for everyone.

    Good luck.

p.s.    I'm a lefty too, can you play deeper inside in the oil or do you get nosebleeds inside 10 board?Wink

    Hey Randy,

Thanks for responding.  I originally had it with a sanded finish (how it came out of the box).  We shined it up some, but not so much that it would take off on me.  More or less something to where it will hold it's line.  I have had a huge problem trying to play to deep, as I as you put it, get major nosebleeds.  I really don't want to have it re-drilled because I know it means plugging the ball and it just to me wears on the ball more.  Someone told me this weekend that, that ball did not suit my style, but I'm not so sure they know what they were talking about.  What's your average, where do you shoot, and what's in your arsenal?

How do you have it drilled? How far is the pin from the cg? Is the pin above your ring finger or below it or kicked to the left? All these things make a difference as to how early or late the ball is going to hook (or not hook) It sounds like you're getting the hang of it though, all I can say is practice, practice , practice alot. A good coach is also worth looking into........

I throw mostly Storm and Ebonite equipment.

I'm partial to Special Agents, Tour Powers, and T-Road pearls or Ebonite's original V2 (best resin ball ever)Big Smile

I don't know how far the pin is from the CG?  Fill me in on the CG and I can tell you.  I do know this, the pin is placed below the right finger hole.  It almost looks like it's drilled for a righty.  It's got a very strong back end hook that smashes the pins and does not stop rolling through until it hits the pits.  I was trying to practice the 5 and 3 rule, of moving 5 boards right and move the target 3 boards.... but I still struggle.  I think you're right a coach would be the way to go.

I throw nothing but Storm/Roto Grip:  Domination, Special Agent, Shift, Spit Fire, Ace, X-Factor Deuce (older stuff) and of course the new one the Cell.

I bowl in St Louis, I hope you're not a Brewers fan haha, they're in town tonight playing the Cardinals.

cg is usually a marking on the ball (somewhere around your palm when your hand is in the ball)

Do you know who Don Griffin is? He's from St.Louis (best lefty there)

Yea, I watched the game last night, not good. (We're givin' you Suppan back!) $40 million+Ick!

Re: New Ball (Roto Grip Cell)

I'll check the CG when I get home and see.  I've heard of Don, but never met him or saw him bowl.  My scratch league is pretty competitive though.  Some of the best bowlers I have ever seen locally in this league, it is both competitive and has a high pay out.  As for the game, I think it's too early to be planning on buying my WS tix, but it is at least a nice start.  I think you guys have the best lineup you've had since the 1982 team that was a monster on the diamond.  Lots of young talent and a nice blend of veterans.  Actually I would take Suppan back in a heartbeat.  We still need veteran pitchers until Mulder and Carpenter come back.  I mean our ace right now is Kyle Lohse, so how long can that last?

I agree, it is the best lineup since '82. I was at that series. Better pitching this year also, as long as Sheets doesn't get any hangnails or somethingSurprise

Nice talking to you, good luck with that ball. Like I said, play around with the surface as there are so many options with todays covers. You'll find something that suits your game.

Re: New Ball (Roto Grip Cell)

I had been having the exact same problems as you with the Cell, I am a lefty and cant play a deep line. But I got a little coaching and found it it was just me trying to aim and control the ball to much. So I suggest getting your coach to help you out with it abit. But the Cell is an amazing ball, I used it in the Pepsi State Championships last weekend and it worked very well.

Re: New Ball (Roto Grip Cell)

This is how I read the problem, this ball is too strong of a ball for the conditon you are trying to use it on. Its a heavy oil ball. Scroggins has been able to use this ball going up the 5 board due to the amount of oil that is outside on the patterns he won this year. Even if the ball is plugged and re-drilled its going to hook a ton based on the coverstock, changing the grip lay out will tame it some but probably not enough. I see this all too often, bowlers complaining about not being able to use a ball on their comfort line when the ball is just too aggressive for the line on the condtion. If you can't learn too play deep, then put this ball away and only take it out on a condition its more designed for, heavy oil with length.

I am going to have a coach work with me on it.  I will update you, but thanks for replying.  I really want to love this ball, as everyone I know that owns one seems to.
