Re: New rules for USBC championships

     Dear jorge300:

I certainly am not a PR man for Mr. Gates, and no doubt, he would never consider me for such a position. But I feel I have the right to comment on anyone's post(s), including yours.

But whereas I probably wouldn't consider some of what you wrote as "personal attacks" on Mr. Gates, you certainly directly addressed him in a DEMEANING manner -- and unnecessarily so, in my opinion.

You DIRECTLY IMPLIED that Don USED TO BE a good bowler, whereas I simply pointed out to you that Don is still a good bowler, and hardly the "181-190 average" player that you indicated he was. You only SPECULATED that Don "went to Nationals and put up a lot of money in the brackets" because he remembered how good he used to be, adding that he just "lost it all." You went on to indicate that Don WAS BITTER toward high-average bowlers, and I simply stated an opinion that Don almost certainly WASN'T bitter -- but I also indicated that Don would have to speak for himself on that (if he so chooses to comment).

Further, how do you KNOW that Don's mindset is "that every 181-190 average bowler should be bitter too"? And you refer to Don's "personal vendetta."

If those AREN'T demeaning comments toward Don, what would you call them?

But I suppose that, based on your past history of personal attacks and demeaning comments, I shouldn't be surprised -- and frankly, I'm NOT surprised.

Those that I care about on these boards did, as far as you and Don go, I could care less if you did or didn't. You should have noticed though, you probably got away with more of your BS then you did while I was here and you will now that I am back.

    Dear jorge300:

Actually, while you were "gone," for the most part, the overall "demeanor" of the forums GREATLY INCREASED, whether you noticed or not.

In fairness, your "absence" played only a very small part of that, but your "return" may well result in at least a small increase in name-calling and demeaning comments toward others. But I hope you prove me wrong.

180 to 215 division = sandbaggers heaven. And 180 to 200 people will be mad at the 200-215 people for feasting on them. Just the under 180 people are getting feasted upon by baggers at 178, 179 now and peole at 165 and below don't have much of a chance.

Actually, any divisional arrangement will have these problems ... unless there is only a few pins difference within divisions and then you don't have a national championship worth a s--t.

I said last year that I could see a third division at maybe 175-195 or 180-200 with Regular above and Booster below. But anything more than that and you have major dilution. And that won't stop baggers. You wanna do that you have to take most of the prize money out of the lower division(s) or leave it there but make it so flat (top 50 all get $1,000, for example) that there is little or no incentive to bag.

    Doctor Doom:

Jorge, this all falls in line with the Don Gates DEADBEAT theory of bowling. That is, all unsanctioned bowlers, be they Cosmic Bowlers, fixed income Senior Bowlers, or just regular open bowlers, are reaping the fabulous benefits of USBC/BPAA, WITHOUT PAYING FOR THEM. Last time I heard this is a free Country, they should be able to bowl how and when they choose, without criticism.

Actually that's not all that far off. I'm not sure if Don used the word "deadbeat" or not but be that as it may ALL unsanctioned bowlers that bowl in houses that have certified lanebeds do have that luxury for free. They also probably use the same rulebook to guide their unsantioned leagues as do sanctioned leagues. If there were no certified bowlers I highly doubt that lanebeds would maintain spec for very long, why would the proprietor bother? for open play? I highly doubt it.

Yes Randy he did use the word DEADBEAT, and he adamantly defended his use of the word. I agree that some folks are getting the advantage of certified lanes for free, but in the case of the Elephant Graveyard, they live on a fixed income, and their once a week get together, should not be criticized, just my opinion. As far as open, and Cosmic bowlers, they pay a good price for what they do, as they don't have the benefit of a league discount card, so they are paying the price for that lane certification. as it is most likely figured in the the price of bowling.

    Cosmic bowlers are paying for...........

    An expensive light show

Loud music through an expensive sound system

A chance to win prizes or cash money by spinning a prize wheel "usually by striking on colored headpins"

    Everything comes with a price.

p.s. what's a league discount card? I'm unaware of such a card. Oh wait, is that the 25 cents off deal?

Mr. herald, don't you as an opinion writer for your paper take stances on issues and cite ypour opinion of what the responses mean? You most certainly do and I have seen numerous articles where you have. I have done no different then you. I offered my thoughts, my opinion on why Don was taking the stance he was. If he chooses to, he can prove my opinion incorrect, or he can choose to ignore which is the option he has choosen. So to me that says I am closer to being write then wrong or he would have taken the time to correct me. Do you consider what you write in your columns personal attacks? I can answer that for you, no you don't as you have said so in the past. So why is it when you do this, it isn't a personal attack, but when I do it, it is?

And why do you feel you have the Right to comment on a post directed to someone else? and since when did posting here become a right? It is a privgledge that can be taken away if the moderator sees fit. Would you butt into two people having a conversation without being invited? Well now you probably would, since we all know you have to be the center of attention everywhere you go. But normal people don't do this. So I have every right to take exception to you sticking your nose into a conversation that wasn't directed at you. One can hope the rules of civilized society and decorum would eventually settle in with you, but I see that is asking for too much. And that "history of personal attacks" you chide about is only there because I refused to blindly follow you like a leming on past issues. Since I have this habit of looking at an issue an thinking for myself, I am threat to you so anytime I disagree with your stance, it's a personal afront to you. And lastly, you are the one who in the past has made anti-semetic remarks, and yet you feel you are beyond reproach. If you want clean up these message boards, start in your own house before you start throwing stones at others.

some places pass out a "league card" (we call them VIP cards at our family of alleys) so that our league bowlers can get the posted half-price practice rates when open bowling.

Um, it's a message board.  People chime in all of the time (like I am now).  If people didn't chime in when posts are directed at other people, there would be about 20-30% less posts.  People ask Riggs all of the time for advice.  Other people voice their opinion too.  Why?  Cause it's a message board.  That is what they do.

We have the exact same thing in my center. It offer a lower price for practice for the leauge bowlers for supporting the center through league participation. Not sure if it is half-price as Guin's is, but it is discounted somewhat.

You don't get one of them. We get a card to open bowl at a discount rate, usually like a buck a game whenever open lanes are available. As far as open and Cosmic play. I am sure the price of them is figured into the overall cost structure of the center. How much does it cost per bed to certify a center, do you know?

GenPounder, i have no issues when someone asks for advice, or asks a question toward a particular person who has knowledge of the subject, and others also share their thoughts on the issue. I would have had no problem Mr. Herald had he shared his thoughts on the issue. Instead he chose to step into a conversation to try and chide me for remarks made directly to someone else. To me that is the difference. For example, if you are standing in a room and you ask to person next to you, do you think it is raining outside? And someone overhears it and comes over and says " i was just outside, it is not raining". That to me is an example of what you are talking about. But if I am talking to someone and I say "I think you are incorrect in your way of thinking because X, Y, and Z", and someone comes over to me and start chiding me and saying "You are wrong this person definately doesn't think like Z...." that is uncalled for an uncoath. That is what Mr. Herald did and why I took exception to it.

Not a clue, as far as cost to certify a center. Only answer I can give is it depends on what kind of shape a centers lanebeds are in and if the proprietor has to open his wallet to bring his house up to spec through maintainence.

I'll have too ask one of my friends who owns a center as I'm curious about what that all entails?

Thanks, I was just wondering if the local association charged the center for their inspection.

     Dear jorge300:

You may take issue with many of my posts, BUT I rarely (as you, and others, often do) ascribe MOTIVES as to WHY others post something or other.

All too often, instead of simply commenting on someone else's post, you (and others) have to throw something else into the mix, such as refering to the other poster as being bitter (or making comments that ASSUME they know what the other person was thinking when they posted).

For instance, there was NO REASON at all why you needed to state an opinion as to Don's current on-the-lanes talent level (which wasn't even an accurate assessment, by the way), and there was NO REASON to refer to him as being "bitter" (and no reason to infer some of the other things ON A PERSONAL LEVEL).

I'm Bill Herald, and I approve this post.
