I've got just over a month before I get my slice of humble pie served to me! I have a couple of questions:
What is the best way to get to Albuquerque from Austin? I have heard take I-10 to I-25, and I've also heard that its quicker to go up through Lubbock.
Secondly, We are staying at Route 66 Casino. I have read the reviews about the Casino/Hotel, but I was wondering if anyone knew about the poker tourneys they have there. I will be there for friday and Saturday night. Also, how far is the casino from the Convention center?
Living in Texas as you know, the highways are very nice. I have relatives in Brown Wood and San Antonio. If you can get to I 10, I believe it takes about the same amount of time to come to Albuquerque as opposed to going through Lubbock. I believe you have a little bit of non interstate roads if you go through Lubbock plus you lose the availability of safety and convenience on the interstate. You have 80 MPH speed limits on I 10 near El Paso and 75 MPH on I 25 which allows you to move along at a good pace. the route through Lubbock is shorter if you are concerned about the cost of gasoline. It is kind of a toss up, but I feel that the safety and number of cars on an interstate have some value.
Route 66 casino is about 23 west of the convention center, but it is all on interstate highways. I do not know about their poker tournaments but I would imagine that they do have them as the weekends are big at the casinos.
If you take I-10 be careful around Ft Hancock. They will pull you over if you are going above 80. I got a ticket going to the state tourney in San Antonio last month for 83 in and 80 if you can believe that.
I do agree with the above poster, though. If you go up through Lubbock you are going to have some smaller highways and a lot of little towns around there where the speed limit goes up to 70 and back down to 35 as you go through the towns until you actually get to Amarillo and can get on I-40. I-10 to I-25 and you will have highways all the way. Depends on if you have the time you may want to take that route one way just so you get some different scenery.
I am in El Paso and it takes me about 8-9 hours depending on if we stop and eat to get to Austin, and then from here to Albq is about 4 hours.
Take 290 west to Junction, I-10 west to I-25 north. Long boring ride, from Junction to El Paso, but you should be able to make good time. It's a hike.

that's what i was gonna say. if my grandparents didn't spoil me with a plane ticket every time i go to el paso to see them from austin, this is exactly what i would do. 290 to I-10. watch for cops. they get lots of money from those unsuspecting tourists on 10.

When I lived in El Paso, I use to make the I-10 to I-20 run to Dallas often, now that was boring. Funny thing on I-10 east from here there is a road sign inviting you to stop in, and enjoy, Pecos Texas______LOL I stopped there for gas once, not much to enjoy.
apparently, you missed the flying j--the PREMIER truck stop in all of...nevermind.
that sign always made me laugh, too. i mean, seriously--PECOS? i had a swim meet there once. it was glorious.
try the 1-10 to 1-20 trip from el paso to midland. it's shorter but about 9 million times more boring.

WOW! i haven't thought about the great city of tye in a looooooong time. talking to you about these towns in west texas brings back fantastic memories. :)

Hey Mr Bowler,
We bowl June 14-15. I bowl at Dart on Thursday nights. My name is Eric Brown...most people know my dad Beck.
As far as the trip route, I've also heard cutting up 285 from Pecos is quicker, but I'm not sure. Someone said there is a nice casino to stop at on that route.

it can be quicker as long as the weather is nice...but it's also more cop-y. troopers like that route a lot. if you're a speeder, i'd stay away from it. i'm just sayin'. not sure about the casino situation, as i'm not much of a gambler.
do you bowl the (former Fox) classic league on Thursdays? sorry to be nosy and get involved in a conversation that's none of my beeswax, but...it's always interesting to see other people from austin around these internet parts. :)

Cities, there are no cities in west Texas, only areas of the highway that are lit more brightly. Hey how about Ranger, got stuck in an ice storm on my way back to El Paso, stopped there for the night. A gas station, and a Dairy Queen, all a stranded traveler could ever want LOL
hey, now...them's fightin' words. ranger has a mcdonald's, too.

Yes I do. I've bowled in that league for 6 years or so now.
