Hi, everyone! I am very much pro-sanction, but I'm looking for some advice. Next week I'll be taking over the league secretary's job in a ladies' "fun" league. It is my understanding that they were a sanctioned league at one time but voted to not sanction a few years ago.
I've only bowled in this league for one season and am a USBC member through my other leagues. Some of the bowlers want to put the sanctioning issue up for vote again next week when we have our meeting. Of course, I'm all for it, but I know many of the women are opposed to it. The most common reason I've heard is "We don't bowl well enough to get anything...." (My response to that would be if you have that kind of negative attitude going in, then you're probably right, etc., etc.)
I have printed out the USBC Membership Benefits and plan to give a copy to every bowler. I'm just posting here in hopes you folks can give me some really compelling points to bring up in favor of sanctioning.
This really is a low-key sort of league, but a few of the girls think going to a bowling tournament sounds like so much fun and I hate for them to miss the opportunity. We're struggling to keep our local bowling center open, and I like to promote/encourage/advocate bowling whenever I can.
Sorry for the rambling, and thank you all for any help you can provide.
Yes and also tell them that it should not matter if they are not good enough to get any awards since USBC is getting out of the awards business anyway.
Skullpants, not out of the awards business but maybe out of the awards business where membership pay for annual 298, 299, 300, 800 series by hot shots like you. How about taking on Randy's challenge and come out of shadows and reveal your name so we can all marvel at all your great accomplishments, your great skills that have sent ??? numbers of bowlers out of the game that you can list for verification.

I'm not sure if my last post was blocked or not. Here it is again
Don why do they only guarantee $10,000 with their bonding? If my league gets robbed at the banquet before the money is passed out we would lose $35.000.

Dear Don:
I could be wrong, but I find it hard to believe that -- even if skullpants would, as you say, "come out of the shadows" -- you, Randy and others would actually "marvel" at his accomplishments, no matter how impressive they may be.
I've never been in a league that wasn't sanctioned, so who or what is the governing body? Who establishes the rules and bylaws? Who ensures the recognition of achievements and the even or fairness of the application of those rules and bylaws? No offense to any individuals, but what is the system of checks and balances to provide that level playing field? Simply stated, my $20 buys me peace of mind! I haven't won any major awards...or honor awards...but I know that when I compete, it is on a fair playing field!

d.m., the bonding company wants your league to use checks for the other $35,000 so the bad guys only get away with $10,000 they can use. If you happen to have an illegal mom/pop or other officers staging a fake theft, which I have had happen while I was an exec, they could not get away with it at all if you had checks for the entire $45,000.

First I am not advocating not certifying, but all that you mention is there already. The only stipulation is you would have to police yourself. You could use all the existing USBC rules. The lane condition most likely will not change, unless you are the only league bowling in the house at that time. The house is most likely USBC certified so they will have to follow USBC standards. The major drawback would be no recognized average that could be used in tournaments, and if this is the only league you bowl in. No card to bowl sanctioned tournaments in. To some this is no big deal, to others it is a big deal. I guess it is all a matter of choice. Me I feel I get my $20 worth, so I will always sanction. Others well, you read to posts. Nice to see you back, don't be a stranger.
I am in agreement with Doom that for most bowlers their perception is that the only real tangible benefit from USBC membership is having a recognized average for handicapped tournaments. Please note that there would be no need for a recognized average to use in scratch tournaments unless they were seperated into divisions. Honestly I think that in today's world a recognized average just is not viewed to be as valuable as it once was to most bowlers, and for this reason bowlers are more likely to cosider not sanctioning.
I do disagree with Doom on one point, and that is the comment about only having having to police yourself if you go unsanctioned. It is my opinion that when you do sanction you are still expected to police yourself for the most part which may be the very reason that a recognized average is not considered as valuable as it once was.
