Indifferent [:|] 3 Questions RE: Prize Fund & Org Meeting

    Good evening,

     1.  Our league has a 4 team roll off at the end of the season to determine league champions.  However, the prize fund that was adopted only pays out to the top 3 positions in the roll off and does not pay any money to the 4th place roll off team.  I have a member of the league that is disputing this and is threatening to protest the league based on his assumption that the prize list is not "fair and equitable".  Does he have a leg to stand on in this situation?  The prize fund was selected by a majority of the league teams in accordance with the USBC prize list rule.

     2.  Several members of our league have requested to possibly having the organizational meeting being conducted by the board of directors only and not by the full membership.  Our meetings tend to be long and drawn out with a lot of bickering back and forth.  Our organizational meetings are always held at the start of each season.  Would we have to have a majority of the membership to adopt such a rule, or does each member of the league, officer or not, have a "right" to participate in the meeting. (For example, if 1 team or member opposes a board of directors only organizational meeting.)  Hopes this makes sense!

    3.  Lastly, we had our organizational meeting 1 week in advance of our 1st week.  During the meeting, several major changes were made by those present such as a new points system (switched to match point), and a change in our handicap.  It was brought to my attention that a league is able to change rules / adopt new rules by the majority of the membership up until the first ball is thrown.  As a result, we had another pre-league meeting the next week before practice where several members proposed changing some of the rules.  Each of the changes did not pass, however was this a legal meeting in which only a majority of the membership was needed since the first ball of the season was not yet thrown.

Thank you in advance for your help.  I can post our league rules for reference if needed.  It is somewhat sad to see a league in such turmoil (3-4 teams out of 28) that always find something wrong and/or want to dispute rules and threaten to quit the league over the rules or prize fund.  I think such antics and constant bickering will ultimately hurt the league and we will continue to lose teams each season as more bowlers get fed up and move to other leagues.

    Many thanks for your help.

chriz, assuming there is a prize list for all 28 teams and extra money for the four team rolloff, the rolloff money could be  winner take all if it was voted that way.  It's hard to see why it would be three out of four but to change it would take 100% approval and under your system it would be very hard to accomplish. It would also take 100% approval to change the voting system.

Don, thanks for your reply.  You are correct, the money from the roll off is additional to the money won from each of the 3rds during the season.  I was threatened with a protest so I wanted to make sure we are "bullet proof" on this one.

Any thoughts on the 3rd question about changing rules prior to the start of the season?  I believe the rule book states that changes can be made by a majority in this situation.

    Thanks

League rules can be changed 5 minutes before the first ball of the league season begins. It is conducted the same as any league meeting during the off season.
